EDUCATION ASSISTANT - Search reopened - previous applicants need not reapply.

Introduction:    The Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living is looking for motivated, dependable and experienced educators to lead after-school sustainability programs in northern RI towns and assist in other aspects of our programming. Education Assistants work with the Director of Education to fulfill on the mission of Apeiron’s education programs—to raise awareness and promote action for the incorporation of sustainability principles and practices into all levels of society—focusing primarily on youth programs, but also working with other aspects of the organization’s larger mission to transform RI into a sustainable state, and with programming at Apeiron’s Center for Sustainable Living in Coventry.

Our programs facilitate learning by doing, through problem solving, with content that supports new thinking and empowers action. We deliver fun, informative, and consciousness-raising classes and workshops, centered upon building connections in our natural world – particularly with our local resources and environments. We draw from traditional, deep ecology and tracking methodologies as well as cutting edge hands on science and art exploration in the delivery of our programs.

Apeiron programs help young people:

  5. Take better care of themselves and their environment

Education Assistant Duties:

  1. Teach children’s programs as guided by the Institute’s Director of Education
  2. Participate in curriculum design and development as part of a teaching team
  3. Help with administration associated with the education programs
  4. Provide administrative support for education-related fundraising efforts
  5. Aid in the development of materials to make Apeiron’s Center for Sustainable Living a destination for sustainable self-guided education and recreation
  6. Aid in the development and delivery of adult workshops and events, including the RI Sustainable Living Festival & Clean Energy Expo
  7. Assist with outreach and development activities
  8. Help with other Apeiron events as needed

Supervision:                  This position is supervised directly by the Director of Education

Performance Review:    Performance of each duty evaluated against the above requirements. The Director of Education, under consultation from the Executive Director in conjunction with the Administrative, Personnel, and Staffing Committee will complete a formal review on a yearly basis. The performance rating is an overall evaluation of performance in the judgment of the supervisor. It will be the basis for any merit pay increases granted by the Apeiron Board of Directors.

Mandatory Qualifications:        

  • Background knowledge of topics pertaining to sustainability
  • Experience teaching groups of youth
  • Teacher training or commensurate experience
  • Good listening and people skills
  • Long-term commitment to ecological living
  • Background knowledge of natural history of the region
  • Professionalism and dependability
  • Ability both to take direction and to work independently
  • A positive outlook

Since education is just one piece of our larger work with the Sustainable RI Campaign, Education Assistants are requested to help out with other Apeiron initiatives from time to time. In this capacity these are some of the qualities and skills we are looking for include:

  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask
  • Computer skills in standard Microsoft programs – Word, Excel & Outlook
  • Graphics skills
  • Project management ability
  • Public speaking
  • Trail design and maintenance experience

Hours:                          20 - 30 hours per week
Strong potential for increased hours

Compensation:              $10.00 - $15.00 per hour, based on experience
