About the Junior Solar Sprint: The Junior Solar Sprint program (JSS) was first developed by the U.S. Department of Energy in the early 1990s and is open to young people between the ages of 10 and 14 who design, build, and race their own model solar electric cars with the guidance of teachers, troupe leaders, parents and other helpful adult mentors. Teams use a standard photovoltaic solar panel, motor, rules and appropriate instruction, and create the fastest, coolest car they can. The program offers educators a stimulating, motivating, experiential method of teaching STEM subjects and provides opportunities for young people to develop hands on skills as engineers, craft persons, scientists, and future renewable energy engineers. The Apeiron Institute has hosted the RI Junior Solar Sprint for eight consecutive years.
